Many candidates who know their syllabus fail their oral exams simply due to nerves. Public speaking under authority pressure is difficult. Here is how active Captains manage candidate composure during mock evaluations.
1. The "Safety-First" Pause
When asked a difficult situation, do not blurt out the first response. Take a deliberate three-second breath. This shows the examiner that you are reflecting calmly, not panicking.
2. Structuring Your Response
State your primary safety action first, followed by regulatory compliance details. Leading with "I will sound the general alarm and stop the engines" immediately puts safety first.
3. Mock Training
There is no substitute for vocal training. Reading charts silently will not help. Practice saying your COLREG actions aloud in front of peers or mentors until the commands flow naturally.
